Where things stand: City have played 8, won 7, drawn 0 and lost 1 in all competitions. Haaland has 7 goals in 7 appearances, and has scored in his last 5. At this rate he finishes the league season on 38. He leads the Golden Boot race on 5, 1 ahead of Alexander Isak. Last time out: Manchester City 5-3 Sunderland, 18 days ago.

This is the first City season in a decade without Pep Guardiola, who left in May after ten years and 20 major trophies. Enzo Maresca was appointed on 29 June on a three-year deal and inherited a squad rebuilt in a Premier League-record £458m window: Enzo Fernández (£125m), Elliot Anderson (£116m) and Ayyoub Bouaddi (£85.6m) in midfield, Iliman Ndiaye out wide, with Rodri sold to Barcelona and Bernardo Silva and John Stones gone on free transfers. Rúben Dias is the new captain.

Haaland arrived off the back of a third Golden Boot (27 goals) and a World Cup quarter-final with Norway, and started the campaign with a buzzcut and a rare opening-day blank. Maresca has said publicly he will rest him more this season; Haaland has said publicly that Arsenal are still the title favourites.

In Europe the league phase draw was brutal on paper: holders Paris Saint-Germain, Rodri's Barcelona, Kevin De Bruyne's Napoli and Sporting CP, plus Porto, RB Leipzig, AEK Athens and Lens. The next round numbers are 350 club goals and 150 in the Premier League, which is 33 away.

Phil Foden was sent off inside 25 minutes at Old Trafford; City still won the derby with ten men, Haaland scoring on the hour.
Haaland's 117 Premier League goals have come in 137 appearances — 0.85 per game, the best goals-per-game ratio the competition has seen.
Maresca says Haaland will get "some rest days" this season, yet he played every minute of City's first five league games.
The Champions League league phase runs to 27 January 2027, when City host Sporting CP on Matchday 8.
